Mamta, who originally hails from Kozhikode, Kerala, grew up in Bahrain and is currently undertaking a degree at Mount Carmel, Bangalore. Mamta is trained in Karnatic and Hindustani music. She will be seen making her playback singing debut in Devi Sri Prasad's Rakhi directed by Krishna Vamsi.

Mamta Mohandas - Bollywood Women

Mamta debuted in the Malayalam film Mayookham in 2005 directed by Hariharan. Although the film did not do well at the box-office, Mamta attracted attention for her sensitive portrayal. Her breakthrough was the role of Mammootty's sister in the successful Bus Conductor.

She then acted with Suresh Gopi in Adhbutam and Lanka and Jayaram in Madhuchandralekha. She was later roped in to play heroine in Keerthi Chakra with Mohan Lal, but opted out later due to date problems.

Mamta has recently signed a Tamil language film entitled Sivapathigaram opposite Vishal Reddy to be directed by Karu Pazhaniappan. Recently, she was approached by renowned Telugu producer, M.S. Raju to do the role of the heroine in his upcoming Telugu film, Hare Rama Hare Krishna opposite Mahesh Babu. Mamta has also signed her next Malayalam film tentatively titled Baba Kalyani opposite Mohan Lal to be directed by Shaji Kailas. Her next project titled Yamadonga opposite NTR Jr. directed by Rajamouli commences in December. Mamta Mukhund Kulkarni - Bollywood Actresses

Mamta Mukhund Kulkarni was born on 20 April 1972 in Mumbai. She is a former Bollywood Actress. She currently lives in New York City.

She gained fame after posing topless (but with her arms crossed over her breasts) for a photograph that appeared on the cover of Stardust, a popular Indian film magazine in September, 1993. She was charged under India's obscenity laws, and found herself under attack from both conservative religious groups, and women's groups. The outspoken actress lashed out at protesters, calling them hypocrites.

Mamta Mukhund Kulkarni

Kulkarni was finally convicted in July 2000, and fined Rs 15,000. However, this caused yet another controversy because she appeared in court in a burqa to evade photographers, which led to death threats and protests from the local Islamic community.

Unfortunately for her, Kulkarni's career was not a happy one. Her detractors claim that she could never fit into the class-conscious industry because of her inability to speak fluent English. However, the other view is that the actress's brazen outspokenness antagonized her colleagues. Kulkarni, who spoke with a broad Marathi accent, was reportedly taunted as being a 'vern' (a derogatory term, short for vernacular) by some well-heeled actresses. Press interviews in which she attacked other actresses, and was attacked in return, worsened the matter further.

At the same time, she continued to be dogged by controversy. In 1997, she was reportedly paid a large amount to perform at a private function by a legislator from Bihar, who was later arrested after investigations into the Fodder Scam case. Kulkarni was interrogated, but she denied any knowledge of the legislator's antecedents

Kulkarni made her Bollywood film debut in the 1992 movie Tiranga. In 1993 she starred opposite Saif Ali Khan in Aashiq Awara which won her a Filmfare Lux New Face Award . She went to appear in more films such as Karan Arjun (1995), Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995) and Baazi (1995) which did well at the box office. However most of her roles involved only a little more than being a love interest to the leading man of the films or glamorous song-and-dance sequences, in keeping with her status as a sex symbol.

Kulkarni had expressed regret at being typecast as an item girl. Her luck seemed to have changed when Rajkumar Santoshi, in whose earlier movie Ghatak she had a cameo appearance, cast her as the female lead in his 1998 movie China Gate, an ambitious remake of The Magnificent Seven. In a deglamorized role and sharing screen space with some of Hindi cinemas finest actors, she had the perfect opportunity to showcase her acting talent.

However, things did not go as planned. Relations between Santoshi and the actress soured, and rumors began circulating that Kulkarni was dropped from the movie, and reinstated only after gangster Chhota Rajan intervened on her behalf. When the movie was finally released, it was also a huge flop. Furthermore, the only song in the movie, the item number Chamma Chamma, was pictured on Urmila Matondkar, even though Kulkarni had built her reputation with such numbers. To add insult to injury, the song turned out to be a chart buster, and was even used in Baz Luhrman's Moulin Rouge!, and greatly increased Urmila's popularity.

Angered at the turn of events, Kulkarni lashed out at Santoshi, accusing him of cutting her screen time because she had refused his advances. Santoshi denied all rumors related to the movie, and the matter was given a quiet burial. However, this proved to be the death blow to Kulkarni's career. She only appeared in a handful of movies after that, and new offers dried up. She has all but quit movies.

Mallika Sherawat - Bollywood Women

Mallika Sherawat - Bollywood Women

Mallika Sherawat was born October 24, 1972, as Reema Lamba in Rohtak, Haryana, India.
She is an Indian actress and model .
She has a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University.

Sherawat's birth name is Reema Lamba; she adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "queen", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema. "Sherawat" is her mother's maiden name.

Mallika became popular the amount of skin shown and the numerous on-screen kisses in the movie Khwahish (2003) which was, by Indian standards quite scandalous. Later that year, she starred in Murder, a film that again raised eyebrows due to the amount of skin shown by Ms. Sherawat, although she also received a 'Best Actress' nomination at the Zee Cine Awards for her performance.

She has also been in the news as the first Bollywood actress to be featured in the Jackie Chan, "The Myth", though for all the buzz, it was more of an extended cameo than a starring role. It might also mark the first time that a Bollywood actress was cast in a film outside Bollywood for her sex appeal. As part of the publicity for the film, Time Magazine film critic Richard Corliss, after meeting her at the Cannes film festival, described her as "a young woman, so gorgeous, curvaceous and genial, and so open in her ambition to be the next big thing, that she surely will be. Striding down the Croisette, making the paparazzi pop their bulbs, Sherawat summoned old-timers' memories of a festival 50 years ago, when the vision of the young Brigitte Bardot on the beach first sold the world on the notion of this Riviera resort as the home for unbuttoned movie glamour. The movies may have grown more dour, but the stars still make it smile. As Cannes was, so Cannes is."

In July 2004, the Bollywood film producers' union IMPAA temporarily blacklisted Mallika. Filmmaker Ramesh Sharma complained that she had committed a breach of contract when she failed to turn up, as promised, for the filming of Kab Kyun Kahan (started in 1999).

Madhubala - Bollywood Women

india, bollywood women, indian, hindi actress, hindi cinema

Madhubala (February 14th, 1933 - February 23rd, 1969) is considered one of the most beautiful actresses to have graced the screens of Bollywood.

Madhubala was born as Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi in Delhi as the 5th child into a poor, conservative Afghan Pashtun Muslim family of 11 children. A Muslim Holy Man is said to have predicted that the young Mumtaz would earn fame and fortune but would lead an unhappy life and die at a young age. Madhubala, with literal meaning of her name being damsel of honey has continued to be considered with utmost admiration, with multiple generation of Hindi movie goers even today. Her father, Ataullah Khan was a coachman in Dehli, who migrated to Bombay remembering the holy man's words and also in search for a better livelihood. They struggled for over a year and Mumtaz entered Bollywood as a child-artist under the name Baby Mumtaz.

Her first film was Basant (1942). Devika Rani was impressed by her performance and changed her name to Madhubala who was to appear in Jwar Bhata (1944) in which Dilip Kumar was playing the lead role. She was unable to work in the film, but this was when Madhubala first set eyes on Dilip Kumar. Mohan Sinha, a Producer-Director taught her to drive at the age of twelve.

Her big break came when Kidar Sharma gave her a chance to act opposite Raj Kapoor in Neel Kamal (1947). Madhubala had finally arrived on the Indian screen. Over the next two years she had blossomed into a captivating beauty (fans referred to her as the "Venus of the Screen"). In 1949, Madhubala starred in Bombay Talkies production Mahal. The film became a super hit. The song Aayega Aanewaala made the careers of Madhubala as well as the playback singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Many other hits followed Mahal with a spate of films opposite the leading men of the day- Ashok Kumar, Rehman, Dilip Kumar, and Dev Anand, but by the mid-1950s, some of her films flopped. But she silenced her critics in 1958, when four of her films turned out to be superhits - Phagun opposite Bharat Bhushan, Howrah Bridge opposite Ashok Kumar, Kala Pani opposite Dev Anand and Chalti ka Naam Gaadi opposite her husband-to-be, Kishore Kumar.

Critics said that Madhubala's beauty was greater than her acting ability, but this was in part due to unwise choices on her part and on that of her father, who was her manager. She was the sole support of a large and desperately poor family, and seemed to take on any role she could get, even if her credibility as a serious actress was compromised.

In 1960, it was Mughal-e-Azam that marked one of her greatest performances as the doomed courtesan Anarkali Wali. Sadly, being plagued with a persistent heart disease, she was confined to bed for the last nine years of her life. She did have the odd release in this period like Passport (1961), Jhumroo (1961), Boy Friend (1961), Half Ticket (1962) and Sharabi (1964), but they were mostly old films that managed to limp towards release. In fact, Jwala, was released in 1971, two years after her death. She died as one of the most beautiful and most charming women on the Indian cinema.

Madhubala's heart problem was discovered in a routine check-up in 1950 when heart surgery was not available. She had to put on a brave face and her illness was kept a secret from the industry for many years. She frequently used to cough up blood on the sets. She moved back to her bungalow a couple of weeks or so later because her in-laws' attitude was upsetting her. She realised she had made a mistake in marrying Kishore. The doctors in London refused to operate on Madhubala as they thought she would die during the operation and if she did survive, it would only be for a year.

She tried making a comeback opposite Raj Kapoor in Chalack (1964), but she collapsed on the first day of shooting and the film was shelved. Her illness eventually claimed her life in 1969, after she suffered from a hole in her heart. She was buried with her diary at Santacruz Burial Ground by her family and Kishore Kumar. In this short life, she made over 70 films, and to this day remains one of the most enduring legends of Indian cinema.

Madhubala and Dilip Kumar first met on the sets of Jwar Bhatta (1944), then again on the sets of their film Tarana (1951); she was eighteen years old and he was twenty-nine. The legend goes that, as in Mughal-e-Azam, she sent him a note inside a flower, and he was amused and intrigued by this and engaged in a dalliance with her. However, her feelings for him were extremely serious.

During the nine-year shooting of Mughal-e-Azam (1960), she wanted to marry Kumar, but he paid her little attention and finally married someone else, while continuing to see her on the side. Madhubala was aware that Anarkali was the role of a lifetime. Her ill health might have prevented her from continuing, but she was determined to revive herself and continue. Director K. Asif was unaware of the extent of Madhubala's physical illness. Obsessed with realism, in the scenes where she is imprisoned, he put real chains on her. She was badly cut and her skin turned blue. Seeing this, her father tried to persuade Asif to use plastic chains but to no avail.

Friends noticed that Madhubala seemed to lose her emotional vitality during this period. Some have speculated this was due at least in part to depression, as Kumar remained indifferent toward her except as an occasional amusement. On August 5, 1960 Mughal-e-Azam released and became a major blockbuster. She was nominated for a Filmfare Award but lost. Some fans suspect that Filmfare has been rigged for years and that Madhubala lost because she wouldn't pay bribes.

Madhubala's affair with Kumar lasted seven years, between 1951 and 1958. In 1958, their affair was ended by her father in a highly emotional and widely publicized court case. Madhubala and Kumar were forcibly separated. They were working on another film together at the time, and were unable to complete it. Toward the end of her life, Madhubala married voice actor and singer Kishore Kumar (no relation).

Madhubala was proposed by three men and turned to Nargis who was a close friend for advice. Nargis suggested that Bharat Bhushan would respect her as he was a widower whereas Pradeep Kumar and Kishore Kumar were already married. However she had already made up her mind on Kishore Kumar as he was like a breath of fresh air in her life.

She accepted as he was the first man who came into her life on the rebound whilst shooting Chalti Ka Naam Gadi and Jhumroo. Her father had informed Kishore that Madhubala would be flying to London for a complicated operation and he could marry her on her return but Kishore knew she wanted to get married before she died and he wanted to fulfill her desire.

They had a civil ceremony . His parents refused to attend the wedding and never really accepted Madhubala as they thought she had broken their sons marriage. When Madhubala went to touch her father-in-law's feet he moved away. Madhubala and Kishore also had a Hindu ceremony to please his parents but they were still not happy. This was all in 1960, the year they were married.
