She did work in music videos, soap operas and commercials before making her big screen debut in the 2003 Bengali film, Bhalo Theko.
Vidya has appeared in over twenty films (with two more scheduled for 2013 release) and has won and been nominated for a ton of awards.
Among her wins are the 2006 Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for Parineeta, the 2006 Filmfare Face of the Year, also for Parineeta and the 2010 Filmfare Best Actress Award for the film Paa.
2012 was a VERY good year for Vidya as she won Best Actress at the National Film Awards, The Filmfare Awards, The Apsara Film & Television Producers Guild Awards, The BIG Star Entertainment Awards, The FICCI Frames Excellence Honours, The Global Indian Film and Television Honours, The International Indian Film Academy Awards, The Screen Awards, The Stardust Awards, The Zee Cine Awards and People's Choice Awards India, all for her role as Silk Smitha in The Dirty Picture.
And also on December 14th, she married film producer Siddharth Roy Kapur.
